Many people have heard of executive functions but aren’t really sure what they are. Simply defined, executive functions are a set of mental skills that helps a person complete tasks. They include skills like working memory, emotional control, and organization, and they help us learn, work, and function in our daily lives. Students who struggle with executive functions often find it difficult to lean because they struggle with things like staying focused, handling emotions, finding materials, following directions, or making good choices. The following pictures outline eight executive functions along with their characteristics and challenges.
